The cannibals were among the first Maori to use muskets for
internal tribal warfare, and they had obtained them at great
difficulty and expense in order to kill the mighty Koraka.
He died in 1805, several years before New Zealand’s
intertribal musket wars began.

Koraka and his tribe lived on a group of small, fictional islands just off of New Zealand, and they were one of the last free tribes of Maori subjugated by the British, although Koraka’s death, decades earlier, spared him that In our story, he desperately longs to return to his wife and family, not knowing their fate after his death.

he fought to save his family from cannibal aggressors who were
among the first to use muskets.

wedding day, hoping to catch his tribe unaware.
An 18th century New Zealander, Koraka was a Maori chieftain of extreme size, standing over 8 foot tall and capable of amazing feats of strength. He was loved and respected by all of his people, for Koraka was a wise and fair leader in addition to being a great warrior.
